歴史の勉強 グラバー氏
1860年代は長崎に住んでいたスコットランド人貿易商トーマス・グラバー氏にとってかなりの収穫の多い時期でした。幕府討幕を図る尊王派薩摩藩長州藩に艦船や武器を販売し、日本の政治に大きな影響を与え、新橋～横浜間よりも7年も前になる1865年に、彼の尽力により長崎では、彼の名前を取って「アイアン・デューク号」という蒸気機関車が人を乗せて走っていたのです。また人材育成にも力を入れ、長州藩から5名、続いて1865年薩摩藩から15名の 若き志士たちを 英国へ渡らせ勉学に励ませました。またグラバー氏は三菱設立にも、醸造業キリンにも多大な貢献をしました。まさに彼抜きにして日本の近代化はなかったといえます。もしグラバー氏が存命ならば、最近発覚した三菱のデーター改ざん問題に対してどう考えるでしょうかね。
The 1860s were a period of considerable success for Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish merchant who lived in Nagasaki. He started by trading in ships and arms to a number of rebellious clans opposed to the established regime in Japan. In 1865, he introduced the 1st steam locomotive ever seen in Japan, the “Iron Duke”, and by 1868 he was influential enough to play a part in the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Meiji Restoration. To help some talented Japanese expand their viewpoints, Glover helped the Choshu Five travel to London on Jardine Matheson ships and helped send fifteen trainees from Satsuma in 1865. Glover played a crucial role in modernizing Japan and establishing the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and Kirin Brewery Company. He should definitely be considered one of the founding father’s of the Meiji Restoration.
