同時通訳
2019年はアポロ11号が人類初月面着陸して50周年にあたります。
私が学業に身を投じていた頃、アームストロング船長が月面着陸する様子を、テレビにかじりついて見ていました。彼は「１人の人間にとっては小さな一歩だが，人類にとっては 大きな飛躍だ。」と述べたことを鮮明に覚えています。その快挙はもちろんのこと、その様子を同時通訳していた西山千さんの見事な日本語訳に感銘して、私も西山さんのような通訳者になりたいと思い立ち英語を勉強し始めました。西山千さんはアメリカのユタ大学を卒業されていましたが、宇宙飛行士の途切れ途切れ声を拾い、見事な日本語通訳をされました。彼こそ、まさに同時通訳者の草分けでしょう。私は仕事をしながら会議通訳の道を目指して通訳養成教室へ通いました。幸い同時通訳クラスに入りましたが、なかなか大変で全脳力を使い頭が熱くなるのを感じました。簡単に言うと会議の発言を聞き、他の言語で瞬時にタイプしているようなものです。私にとって同時に二つのことをするのは難しいと感じながら、この年齢でも一つのこと、英語の勉強だけは続けようと心がけています。
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon in 1969 as part of NASA’s Apollo 11 lunar mission.
Around the time I was still a student, I had my eyes glued to the television as I watched Neil Armstrong’s accomplishment of landing on the moon, in 1969. This was an achievement of a lifetime. He said, “That’s one small step for ( a) man, one giant leap for mankind.” During the broadcast, Sen Nishiyama was simultaneously translating the English into Japanese with great preciseness. Seeing that, I thought to myself that I would like to be able to do the same. Sen Nishiyama graduated from The University of Utah. Mustering disconnected sentences, he made it. He was a pioneer in his field.
After I finished work, I went to a language school to learn to become an interpreter. Being a simultaneous interpreter is really tough. I felt like my head was heating up. It is just like you’re typing in another language while listening to a conference in your native language. I came to realize that juggling two things at the same time is not my thing, but I am fortunate that I am still concentrating on one thing, which is learning English at this age.
