The entrance examination season is going to start soon. Apparently, parents and children get nervous during this season. To make you relax, I want to talk about Ikkyu, who is very famous for his wits.
Ikkyu lived until the age of 87, and died in 1481. Some say he was a son of the Emperor who had a relationship with a woman from an anti-Imperial family, and therefore, he was sent away to become a monk. He led a wandering life and refused to take his own temple or even have his own disciples. He was a renowned poet and calligrapher. He is said to have enjoyed fish and sake. Even among Zen monks, who have a history of being strange people, his behavior was considered more than outlandish. On his deathbed, he said, “I don’t want to die.” He might be the black sheep of the family.
