子供に伝えたい今も昔も大切なことば
勉学の秋ということで今月は皆さんに詩歌をお送りします。サミュエル・ウルマンさんは、アメリカの実業家・詩人であり「青春」という詩集でよく知られています。この詩はウルマンさんが78歳のときに書いたもので、あの連合軍司令官であったマッカーサー元帥やパナソニックの松下幸之助さんも座右の銘としていたと言われています。
青春とは人生のある時期を指すのではなく、精神の在りかたを指すのです。
優れた創造力、たくましい意志、燃えるような情熱、 臆病な弱い心を打ち破る勇気、困難に負けない冒険、このような心の在り方を青春と言うのです。
人は年齢を積み重ねるだけで老いるのではなく、生きていく希望を失った時、初めて老いていくのです。年月は皮膚にしわを増やすが、生きる情熱をなくすと、その人の心に錆ができしわが増えるのです。
人は、七十歳であろうと、十六歳であろうと、 心に変化を求め続け、万物への尊敬の念を抱き、決してへこたれず、子供のような探究心と生きる喜びを持ち続けば、その人はいつまでも青年です。
人は信念を持つことによって若々しく、疑念を抱き続けると老いてしまう。
人は自信を持つことによって若々しく、臆病に生きることによって老いてしまう。
希望を持つ限り若々しく、落胆して生きることによって老いてしまう。自然の美しさ、神の恵み、人間の勇気の力を偉大なものと考える限り、人の若さは失われることはありません。
皆さんは青春の真っ只中にいます。この詩歌を心に留め勉学にいそしみましょう。
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind.
It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees,
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions,
it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is wireless station, so long as it receives message of beauty, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
